Woven Ties Guide
What about woven ties, or the weave of the tie? With some fabrics the weave doesn't particularly matter so long as it is a pretty tight and even weave. However if the tie is woven pretty loosely and the weave is more visible then it matters a little bit more. With something like silk you want a tightly woven fabric for the tie so it has a nice and even shine. In addition to that a loose weave would show more with silk. Here is a list of the most common weaves: plain weave, basket weave, twill and any sort of knit or crochet. Obviously you don't what to do a knit or crochet with any fine fabric. That is something you should do with something thicker like a yarn, wool or thick cotton.
Knit Ties
The knit tie is very loosely woven and is more about the weave and perhaps the pattern. It is very flexible but has a tendency to get caught and either tear or stretch in one place. This can be difficult to undo and once it is pulled apart like that it normally gets worse. However knit ties are easier to make, they can be made at home or at work in your spare time. The nice thing about the knit ties is the designs do not have to be as intricate because the weave itself give the tie a nice look.
Crochet Ties
I can't say I have seen many people wearing crochet ties. More people tend to choose knit because it is a tighter more consistent weave and it is much easier to make a nice looking tie by knitting. That's not to say that it can't be done though. Crochet is more for larger pieces of clothing. Crochet is also more of a weave for women, men tend to stick with the more uniform things. The weaves that are more formal.
Business Weave
Now you might not think of this at first, but I'm sure you would if you were buying a tie. The tie should be a nice even tie that generally goes with what everyone else is wearing. This is why men stay away from the loosely woven ties. Things like knit ties would stand out at the office unless the material that was woven was thinner than yarn. It is possible to mechanically do this. What you would want for formal settings is a tight weave like something you would normally see with polyester, cotton or even silk.
