Tie Length

Tie Length

What is the right tie length?  Does it depend on your size?  Does tie length depend on preference and what you are wearing?  Why can't it be more simple?  In this page I hope to answer all of these questions and more.  First off it should be noted that there are a variety of ties and each one has a different look.

What Is The Right Length For Me

The length of a tie is just that.  Suited to each individual person.  I can't give a set measurement or and exact chart.  It would only be an estimate based on average weight, leg to upper body proportions and based of the average build.  For most ties there is a great deal of leeway.  Just try your best to keep the tie from extending past you belt.  Any further and you might as well take the tie off.  Otherwise you will need to have a jacket to cover it, but the odds are the top of the tie will then look too thin because the tie does not widen much until it gets toward the bottom.  A tie should only go past your belt if you are sitting and slouching a bit.  You don't want to have the tie go too far past your belt ever when you are sitting because even when you are sitting you still have to worry about your looks.  So be careful when considering tie lengths and try sitting down before you head out.  If the length is too long then you can retie your tie and then adjust the length appropriately.

Tie Length For Lengthy People

For people who are taller you want the tie to be higher up then everyone else's because regardless of your height people can still see how long your ties is.  An average length tie will due for you.  With wider ties you can wear them just a bit higher than you can a normal tie.  If you don't the tie will look too large and will draw too much attention.  With thinner ties yeah can wear them does to about your naval.

Short Length Ties For Shorter People

For people who are slightly less then average size you can wear your tie down a bit lower. Really there is a sliding rule where you could just take the length of a tie from the average Joe and place it on people taller and shorter and that would be expected length or the appropriate length.  For people who are less then average height the length   you don't want your tie to be too short.  Keep it around or just below your naval.

General Rule

Keep it around the belly button.  For almost any tie, wide, thing, blunt ended or pointed you can use this general rule of thumb and be pretty sure you don't look bad.  For people with a bit of a gut it is okay to wear the tie just a bit higher, you don't want it hanging over though.  The right length would be to have it resting on your stomach instead of flapping around.  That can be quite distracting and is not professional.
