Tie clasps are normally metal and grab onto the tie. One of the main componants of the tie clasp is to keepp the tie hanging straight down and keep the tie from swinging and flopping around wildly. This is great because ties are light and are not fastened to anything. Tie clasps are also great for show and tell. If you think ties are for regular stiffs and suites than feel free to add a tie clasp if you aren't comfortable wearing a more outgoing tie or creative tie. Tie clasps are very simple too. That's one of the beaties of them. There are very few componants which means that the likely hood of anything going wrong or breaking is low. Whereas with a tie chain you have a chain. Tie bars are fine too. They are essentially the same with the exception of a few minor details.
Tie chains are really quite nice, but not for everyone. Tie chains are more likely to break and can't really be worn by everyone. Tie chains are a bit larger and don't fit all people. Though there are different sizes of chains, the idea of a chain particularly rarely fit the less extravegant people unless customely made to fit them. Be careful though, tie chains can get caught on all sorts of things, like buttons on you or another person, a piece of a woman's dress or on an obtrusive object on a wall, door or a piece of furnature.
If you recall earlier, I said that tie chains are not for everone. Remember that there are exceptions to every rule. Though most people chose to wear tie clasps and tie chains are less available.
